In the name of God, the Compassionate, the Merciful.
(1) This is a message from God and His Messenger canceling any agreements you, as believers, had with those who worship many gods.
(2) You pagans can travel freely in the land for four months, but remember, there's no getting away from God. And that God will be humiliating those who don't believe.
(3) A message from God and His Messenger goes out to everyone on the day of the great pilgrimage, saying that God and His Messenger do not want anything to do with those who worship many gods. So if you, pagans, change your ways, it's better for you. But if you don't, know that you can't escape God. And tell the non-believers about a painful punishment coming their way.
(4) Unless you made a deal with some pagans, and they've kept their promises and didn't help anyone against you. Then, stick to your agreement with them until it ends. God loves those who are aware of Him.
(5) After the Sacred Months are over, deal with those who broke their promises among the non-believers by killing them wherever they are. Find, capture, surround, and be ready for them everywhere. But if they change their ways, pray, and pay the alms, then let them go. Indeed, God is All-Forgiving and Most Merciful.
(6) If any of those pagans come to you seeking your shelter, protect them until they hear the Word of God. Then, help them get to a safe place. They don't know any better.
(7) How can pagans have a treaty with God and His Messenger, except those you have already made a treaty with at the Sacred Mosque? As long as they keep their promise to you, keep your promise to them. Indeed, God likes those who are respectful and mindful of Him.
(8) How? They don't care about family ties or agreements if they overpower you. They might say nice things but don't mean it deep down. Many are rebellious and don't believe in what they're saying.
(9) They've sold the revelations of God for a little price, and they try to stop others from following the Right Way. Indeed, what they're doing is terrible.
(10) They don't care about family ties and agreements made with believers. These are the ones who have gone too far.
(11) If they repent, pray regularly, and give to those in need, they are your fellow believers. We explain these teachings to people who understand.
(12) But if they break their promises and attack your faith, fight those who lead others away from the truth. They don't respect their commitments; stand up to them, and perhaps they'll stop harming.
(13) Won’t you stand up against those who broke their promises, plotted to kick out the Messenger from Mecca, and attacked you first? Are you afraid of them? God deserves your fear more if you're a true believer.
(14) Stand up for what's right and fight them. God will punish them through your hands, put them to shame, and grant you victory over them. This will also bring comfort to the hearts of those who believe.
(15) God will remove the anger from their hearts, and He can forgive anyone He chooses. God is All-Knowing and Wise.
(16) Or do you believe you'll be left alone without God proving those who work for His cause and don't take anyone but God, His Messenger, and fellow believers as close allies? God knows everything you do.
(17) It's unsuitable for those who don't believe in God to care for His places of worship when they do not believe in Him. Their actions won't count, and they'll end up in the Fire forever.
(18) God's places of worship should only be visited by those who believe in God and the Last Day, pray, give to those in need, and fear no one except God. They are the ones who will find the Right Way.
(19) Do you think providing water to pilgrims and caring for the Sacred Mosque is the same as believing in God and the Last Day and working hard for God’s cause? Well, in God's sight, they are not the same. God doesn't guide the wrongdoers.
(20) Those who believed, left their homes for God and struggled hard for God’s cause with their money and lives are greater in rank with God. They are the real winners.
(21) Their Lord gives them the good news of mercy from Him, acceptance, and Gardens with everlasting bliss.
(22) They'll be there forever. That's a massive reward from God!
(23) O you who believe! Don't make your parents and siblings your main allies if they don't believe in God. If you do, you're doing something wrong.
(24) Say, "If your family, your kids, your brothers and sisters, your partner, your relatives, the stuff you own, your job, and the places you like are more important to you than God, His Messenger, and struggling for His cause, then wait and see what happens when God's plan unfolds." God doesn't guide those who disobey.
(25) Truly, God has helped you win many fights, like at the Battle of Ḥunain. You thought your large army would guarantee success back then, but it didn't help much. The land felt small, and you had to turn back and run.
(26) But then, God sent peace and comfort to His Messenger and the believers, and some invisible forces took care of those who didn't believe. That's what happens to those who don't believe.
(27) After that, God can forgive whoever He wants. God is Forgiving and Merciful.
(28) O you who believe! Certainly! People who believe in more than one god are impure, so they're not allowed to go near the Sacred Mosque from now on. If you're worried about not having enough money, God can make you rich out of His bounty if He wants. God knows everything and is Wise.
(29) Stand up for what you believe in and fight those who do not believe in God and the Last Day. Those who do not forbid what God and His Messenger forbade. And those who don't follow the religion of truth from among those who were given the Scripture until they pay the tax willingly and obey.
(30) And the Jews say, "Ezra is God's son," and the Christians say, "The Messiah is God's son." These are just unfounded claims, repeating what non-believers said in the past. God disapproves of these ideas! How can they be led away from the truth?
(31) They took their rabbis, priests, and the Messiah, son of Mary, as lords instead of God, even though they were told to worship only One God. There is no God except Him. He is far above anything they link to Him!
(32) They want to put out God's light by speaking against it, but God will make sure His light is perfected and shines even brighter, even if it upsets those who don't believe.
(33) He sent His Messenger to guide people with the truth and the Right Way of life, making it the most powerful over all others, even though some people who worship many gods may not like it.
(34) O you who believe! Indeed, many rabbis and priests are greedy and take people's money for themselves and stop others from following God's Way. And those who collect lots of gold and silver for themselves and do not spend it for God's cause will face painful torment.
(35) On a Day when their gold and silver will be burned in the fiery depths of Hell, it will leave marks on their foreheads, sides, and backs. They'll be told, "This is what you saved for yourselves. Now feel the consequences of your hoarding!"
(36) Certainly! The number of months God has set is twelve, and four are sacred. This has been the plan since the day God created the heavens and the earth. It's essential to follow this plan and not harm each other during these sacred months. Fight those who worship multiple gods just as they fight you. Remember, God is always with those who are mindful of Him.
(37) Changing the importance of these sacred months is a sign of not believing in God, which can lead the non-believers in God far from the Right Way. Some people mess with the sacred months. Sometimes, they say it's okay for a year, and then they say it's not okay the next year, all to follow the rules set by God. They approve of things that God said not to do. They think their wrong actions are okay, but God doesn't guide those who don't believe.
(38) O you who believe! What’s the matter with you? When you're told, “Get together to fight for God’s cause,” you stick so heavily to the ground? Do you prefer this life over the afterlife? Remember, the pleasures of this world are nothing compared to what awaits in the Hereafter.
(39) If you don't get together and fight when needed, you might face a painful punishment from God. He can replace you with others, which won't affect Him. Remember, God can do anything.
(40) If you do not support the Messenger, God will stand by him, just like when he had to leave Mecca because some people didn't believe in him. They were two in a cave, and he told his friend, "Don't be sad. God is with us." God comforted him, sent unseen forces, and foiled their plans. Remember, God's plans always win. God is All-Powerful, All-Wise.
(41) Stand up and fight, whether a small effort or a big one and work hard in God's way with your money and your life. It's the best thing for you if you understand.
(42) If the destination was closer and the journey shorter, they would have come with you. But the distance seemed too far, and now they're saying, "If we could, we would have joined you." They're lying to themselves, and God knows it.
(43) May God forgive you! Why did you let them stay back before figuring out who was truthful and lying?
(44) Those who genuinely believe in God and the life after this one won't ask for an excuse to avoid fighting for their beliefs with their wealth and lives. God knows perfectly who is righteous.
(45) Only those who don't believe in God and the afterlife, and they're not sure about it, would ask your permission. They have uncertain hearts, so they're unsure about their decision.
(46) They should have decided earlier if they wanted to join. But God wasn't too happy with them, so He kept them away and said, "Stay with those who are staying back."
(47) If they had joined you, they would've caused much confusion and trouble, trying to break up the group. Some of you might've listened to them, but God knows who's wrong.
(48) They've tried to cause problems before and plotted against you, but in the end, the truth came out, and God's plan prevailed, even though they didn't like it.
(49) Some say to you, "Let me stay home and do not test me." But they failed the test. Sadly, Hell will engulf those who don't believe.
(50) When good things happen to you, they get upset. But when something terrible happens, they say, "We were prepared for this," and happily walk away.
(51) Say, "Nothing will happen to us except what God has planned for us. He is our Protector." So, trust in God, believers!
(52) Say, "Do you think anything other than two good things will happen to us? We believe God will bring punishment to you, either directly or through us. So, wait, we're waiting along with you."
(53) Say, "Whether you donate willingly or not, God won't accept it because you've been rebellious."
(54) Their donations aren't accepted because they don't believe in God and His Messenger. They only show up for prayer when they feel like it and only give money when they have to.
(55) Don't be impressed by their wealth and kids. God plans to punish them through these things in this life, and they will leave this life while they're still disbelievers.
(56) They swear they're on your side but not. They're just afraid of you.
(57) They'd run and hide in a cave or somewhere safe if they could.
(58) Some of them complain about how charity is distributed. They're happy when they get something but angry when they don't.
(59) If only they had been happy with what God and His Messenger gave them and said, "God is enough for us! God will bless us with His kindness, and His Messenger will too. We trust God with our hopes."
(60) The obligatory charity is only for those in need and the poor, people who work to help others, those whose hearts lean toward Islam, those who need freedom, those with debts, and the homeless. This is a duty from God. God knows everything and is Very Wise.
(61) Some people say hurtful things to the Prophet, saying, "He is all ears. He listens to everyone." But tell them, "He listens to what's best for you. He believes in God, trusts the believers, and is a mercy for those who believe in Him among you." Those who hurt God's Messenger will face a painful punishment.
(62) They swear by God to make you happy. But it's God and His Messenger that they should please if they are true believers.
(63) Don't they realize that anyone who goes against God and His Messenger will end up in the Fire of Hell forever? That's the worst outcome.
(64) Those pretending to be believers are worried that God might reveal a chapter about them, exposing their true intentions. Tell them, "Go ahead and make fun! God will surely reveal what you're afraid of."
(65) If you ask them, they will say, "We were just chatting and joking around." Ask them, "Were you making fun of God, His messages, and His Messenger?"
(66) Don't apologize. You have become disbelievers after being believers. If We forgive some of you, We will punish others for their evil doing.
(67) Hypocritical people encourage what's wrong, discourage what's right, and don't help those in need. They've forgotten God, and He's forgotten them. Hypocrites are the ones who openly disobey.
(68) God has promised the hypocrites, both men and women and the disbelievers, a place in Hell where they'll stay forever. It's what they've earned, and God has turned away from them. They'll suffer for a long time.
(69) Like some people before you. Those folks were stronger, wealthier, and had more kids than you. They had a good time in this life, and now you're having a good time too, just like them. But you're also talking nonsense, just like they did. The things they did didn't count in this world and the next. They're the ones who lost out.
(70) Haven't you heard about what happened to the people who lived long ago? There were the people of Noah, A'ad, and Thamud, and even Abraham, the people from Midian, and the upside-down cities. God sent messengers to them with clear signs, but they wronged themselves, not God.
(71) Believers, men and women alike, look out for each other. They support what's right and discourage what's wrong, pray, give obligatory charity to those in need, and follow God and His Messenger. They're the ones who will receive God's Mercy. God is All-Powerful and All-Wise.
(72) God has promised the believers, men and women alike, fantastic Gardens with rivers flowing beneath them and splendid homes in the Gardens of Eden. And the best part? The pleasure of God. That's the real victory!
(73) O Prophet! Stand up against those who don't believe in God and those who pretend to believe. Stay firm with them. Their place will be in Hell. It's a terrible outcome!
(74) They swear they never said anything wrong, but they did, and they turned away from faith after they had accepted it. They even tried to plot against God and His Messenger because they got blessings. If they repent, it is best for them, or else God will torture them with a painful punishment here and in the afterlife, and they won't have anyone to help.
(75) Some of them promised God that if He gave them stuff, they'd share it with those in need and be good people.
(76) But when they got what they wanted, they got greedy and turned their backs on their promise.
(77) Because they broke their promise and lied, God let them be fake inside until the day they meet Him.
(78) Don't they know God knows all their secrets and plans? He knows everything, even the stuff they hide and all the unseen.
(79) People who make fun of others who give to charity and mock those who can only offer their hard work, God's not happy with them. They will have a painful punishment.
(80) It doesn't matter if you ask God to forgive them or not, O Prophet. Even if you ask for their forgiveness seventy times, God won't forgive them. That's because they've lost faith in God and His Messenger. God doesn't guide those who rebel.
(81) Some folks stayed behind and were happy after God's Messenger left. They didn't want to make an effort with their money or lives in God's cause. They even said, "It's too hot to go out." But tell them, "Hellfire is way hotter if they only knew."
(82) They can laugh a little now, but they'll cry a lot later due to what they earned.
(83) So, if you come back to them, and they ask your permission to go out and fight with you, say, "Sorry, you will never join us or fight an enemy with us. You were fine with staying behind before, so stay with those who remain."
(84) And don't ever pray for any of them who has passed away and don't stand by their grave. They disbelieved in God and His Messenger and died while disobeying Him.
(85) Don't be impressed by their wealth and kids. God wants to use them to punish these disbelievers in this world, so they'll leave this world as disbelievers.
(86) And when a chapter is revealed that tells them to believe in God and fight with His Messenger, the rich ones among them make excuses to stay behind, saying, "Let us hang out with those who don't fight."
(87) They're happy with staying behind, and their hearts are sealed, so they don't get it.
(88) But the Messenger and the believers with him fought with everything they had. They're the ones who get the good stuff, and they're the winners.
(89) God has prepared for them gardens with rivers flowing underneath where they'll live forever. That's the ultimate success.
(90) Some Bedouins made excuses to avoid fighting, while others were untrue to God and His Messenger and stayed behind without a reason. The disbelievers among them will suffer a painful punishment.
(91) There's no blame on the weak, the sick, or those who can't give if they stay behind as long as they're sincere to God and His Messenger. The good-doers aren't at fault. God is All-Forgiving, Most Merciful.
(92) There's no blame on those who asked you for help with transportation. When you couldn't find any, they left with tears in their eyes because they were sad. They couldn't help.
(93) But blame is on those who ask to be excused even when they can help and prefer to stay home with the helpless. God has sealed their hearts, but they don't know it.
(94) When you return to them, they give you excuses. Tell them, "Don't make excuses because we won't believe you. God has already let us know about your true beliefs. Both God and His Messenger will watch what you do next. Eventually, you'll be brought back to the One Who knows everything, seen and unseen. Then He will tell you about what you did before."
(95) When you return from battle, they'll swear to you by God to get you off their backs. Leave them alone because they're not pure. Their home will be Hell for the bad things they've done.
(96) They swear to you to make you happy, but even if you're pleased with them, God isn't pleased with those who disobey.
(97) The Bedouins around Medina are pretty stubborn in disbelief and hypocrisy, and they’re the most likely to ignore the limits that God revealed to His Messenger. God knows best, and He's Wise.
(98) Some people in the desert think that what they donate is a loss and hope for bad things to happen to you. Bad times will come back to them, and God hears and knows everything.
(99) But others in the desert believe in God and the Hereafter. They see their donations as a way to get closer to God and to get blessings from the Messenger. It will bring them closer to God. God will welcome them with His mercy. God is All-Forgiving, Most Merciful.
(100) The first group of immigrants and those who helped them, along with those who followed their good example, God is pleased with all of them, and they are pleased with Him. He has prepared beautiful gardens for them, with rivers flowing underneath, and they'll live there forever. That's the ultimate success.
(101) Sadly, there are hypocrites among the desert people around you and even among the city's people. They've become masters in their hypocrisy. You might not know who they are, but God knows them well. They will be punished twice, and then they'll face a severe punishment.
(102) On the other hand, some have realized their mistakes. They mixed good deeds with bad ones, but God may be Merciful to them. He is indeed All-Forgiving, Most Merciful.
(103) O Prophet! Collect a charity from their wealth to purify, bless, and pray for them. Your prayers will comfort them, and God hears everything and knows everything.
(104) Don't they know that God accepts repentance from His servants and takes their charitable acts, and God is the One Who is Full of Forgiveness and Mercy?
(105) Tell them, “Do as you want because God, His Messenger, and the believers are all watching what you do. In the end, you will return to the One Who knows all, what's hidden and obvious, and He will tell you all about your deeds.”
(106) Some people are hopeful, waiting for God's decision about punishing or forgiving them. God knows everything, and He is Wise.
(107) And some hypocrites build a mosque, pretending it's for good. Still, they want to cause trouble, make others disbelieve, create divisions among believers, and support those who fought against God and His Messenger before. They swear, “We intended nothing but good,” but God knows they are indeed liars.
(108) Never, ever pray in it. A mosque built with good intentions and righteousness from the beginning deserves your prayer. There are people in it who strive to be pure, and God loves those who purify themselves.
(109) Which is better: someone who built his building on righteousness and seeking the pleasure of God or someone who built his building on the edge of a crumbling cliff, making him fall into the Fire of Hell? God doesn't guide those who do wrong.
(110) The place they built will make them doubt until their hearts break. God knows everything and is Wise.
(111) God has genuinely bought the lives and belongings of believers in return for Paradise. They fight for God's cause and may either kill or lose their lives. This promise is true in the Torah, the Gospel, and the Quran, and there's no promise more truthful than God's. So, be happy about the deal you've made with Him. That's the real victory.
(112) They repent, worship, praise, fast, bow down and prostrate themselves, support what's right, speak out against what's wrong, and follow God’s rules. And give good news to believers!
(113) The Prophet and the believers shouldn't ask God for forgiveness for those who worship multiple gods, even if they're family, once it's clear they're headed for Hell.
(114) Abraham prayed for his father to be forgiven because he made a promise to him. But when Abraham realized his father didn't believe in God and was against Him, he decided to cut ties with him. Abraham was kind and patient.
(115) God leads people in the right direction, and once He points them on the Right Path, He won't let them wander off again unless He tells them what to avoid. God knows everything.
(116) Indeed, everything in the heavens and the earth belongs to God. He's the One Who gives life and causes death. You don't have a guardian or helper besides God.
(117) God has indeed shown mercy to the Prophet, the Emigrants, and the Helpers who supported him during tough times, especially when the hearts of some were feeling uncertain. God accepted their apology. Indeed, He is Ever Kind and Most Merciful to them.
(118) God has also shown mercy to three people who had stayed behind and felt guilty about it. They were so troubled that the whole world seemed to close in on them, and they were deeply upset. They realized that turning to Him was the only refuge from God's judgment. God, in His mercy, forgave them so that they might repent. Remember, God is always ready to accept repentance and is Incredibly Merciful.
(119) O you who believe! Be mindful of God and be among the truthful.
(120) It's unsuitable for the people of Medina and the Bedouins nearby to leave God's Messenger alone or think their lives are more important than his. That is because when they face thirst, tiredness, or hunger while doing things for God, like going against non-believers or dealing with enemies, it's all recorded for them as a righteous deed. God doesn't waste the reward of those who do good.
(121) Every time they spend money, big or small, or travel across a valley, it's recorded for them. God keeps track of it all and rewards them for their good deeds.
(122) All the believers shouldn't rush off to war at once. From each division, there should be a group that stays behind, learns more about their faith, and warns their people when they return so that they may be careful.
(123) Fight those who don't believe in God around you, and show them your strength. Remember, God is with those who are mindful of Him.
(124) And when a new chapter is revealed, some people sarcastically say, "Who among you has become more faithful because of this?" But for those who believe, it strengthens their faith, and they feel happy about it.
(125) But those who have a problem in their hearts, it only makes them more and more wicked, and they end up passing away without believing in God.
(126) Don't they see they're tested once or twice yearly? But they don't ask for forgiveness or learn a lesson from it.
(127) And when a new chapter is revealed, they look at each other and act secretive, like they're hiding something. Their hearts have been turned away because they just don't reason.
(128) Certainly, a Messenger has come to you from your people. He feels for your struggles, cares about you, and is kind and merciful to those who believe.
(129) If they turn away, say, "God is enough for me. There's no one worth worshiping except Him. I trust in Him, and He's the Lord of the Mighty Throne."
