In the name of God, the Compassionate, the Merciful.
(1) O you who believe! Don't take those who are enemies to God and you as allies, even if you feel close to them. They've rejected the truth that came your way. They kicked the Messenger out of Mecca and you just because you believe in God, your Lord. If you're working hard for God's cause and approval, why show love to them secretly? God knows what you keep hidden and what you show. Anyone doing this has strayed from the Right Path.
(2) If they gain control over you, they'll become your enemies, openly using their actions and words to hurt you, hoping you'll give up on your beliefs.
(3) Your family and children won't help you on Judgment Day. God will separate all of you. He sees everything you do.
(4) You have an excellent example in Abraham and those with him. They told their people, "We want nothing to do with you or what you worship besides God. We reject you, and there is enmity and hatred between us until you believe in God alone." The only exception was when Abraham tried to pray for his father, but even then, he said, "I can't protect you from God." They prayed, "God, we trust in You. We always turn to You, and in the end, we'll return to You.
(5) O Lord! Protect us from the evil plans of those who disbelieve. Forgive us, Lord, because you are the All-Powerful, the All-Wise."
(6) You can find great role models in them if you believe in God and the afterlife. But if someone turns away, remember that God doesn't need anyone, and He deserves all praise.
(7) It's possible that God might create a friendly bond between you and people you currently see as enemies. God is Capable, and God He is All-Forgiving, Most Merciful.
(8) God doesn't stop you from treating people who haven't fought against you or kicked you out of your homes with kindness and fairness. God loves those who are fair.
(9) But God does tell you not to be close friends with those who fought against you because of your faith, forced you out of your homes, or helped others do so. If you befriend them, you're being unjust.
(10) O you who believe! When women who believe in God come to you as refugees, test them if they genuinely believe. If they do, don't return them to non-believers. These women can't be married to non-believers, and vice versa. Give back any money they spent on them. You can marry these women as long as you pay their dowries. Don't marry non-believers, but give back what was spent and let them do the same. This is God's decision. He knows everything and is Very Wise.
(11) If any of your wives leave you and go to people who don't believe in your faith, and you want to punish them, give back to those whose wives left them the same amount they spent on their wedding gifts. And remember to be mindful of God, the One you believe in.
(12) O Prophet! If any believing women come to you and pledge to you not to worship anyone else besides God, steal, fornicate, kill their children, lie about who their child's fathers are, or disobey you in what's right, then accept their pledge and ask God to forgive them. God is All-Forgiving and Most Merciful.
(13) O you who believe! Don't become close buddies with people that God is upset with. They've given up on the afterlife, just like non-believers in the grave who've lost hope.
